While some individuals are cool as cucumbers, others are worrywarts. People in the latter category may even have a genetic predisposition to anxiety. However, those who are coping with depression and anxiety can turn to yoga, according to Yahoo! Sports.
One reason why exercise can help alleviate anxiety is that it takes one's mind off of whatever it is that may cause them to worry, according to sports writer K.C. Dermody, who practices yoga as a way to deal with these feelings. Furthermore, she describes yoga as a way to build muscle, support the heart and relax through deep breathing.
Keeping oneself occupied with Oregon yoga classes and other exercises is much healthier than turning to other, less wholesome forms of stress relief, such as alcohol and tobacco.
"Many people find that moderate exercise can work better than an anti-anxiety medication, and women who have a family history of the disorder do particularly well with moderate exercise," Dermody wrote. "For those with no family history, intense activity works better at eliminating or reducing anxiety. For all men, it seems intense exercise works the best."
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a division of the National Institutes of Health, 13 million American adults practiced yoga within a year of being surveyed in 2007.
