Thomas Berry, Catholic theologian

T V E HAVE COME TO A POINT in hurnan history where we need to redefine spirituality in a way that goes beyond religion—one that is satisfying to atheist and deist alike. Many of the squabbles we have today in regard to religious faith are not about spirituality at all. Rather, they are about layers of identity that we have piled on our spirituality. We keep trying to give specific form to something that is actually formless and beyond the limits of our rational minds. The more we try to define spirituality through theology and philosophy, the more it slips away from us.

I believe that spirituality is actually quite simple, so simple, in fact, that our rational minds wrill barely allowr for it. Ironically, the tricky part is not learning to be spiritual. That part is automatic and requires little effort. The real trick is getting your thinking mind out of the way so that you can experience it directly and purely.

All you need is genuine determination to bring what you desire into reality. If you really want to start creating your life, get the word impossible out of your vocabulary. Yes, there is a certain value to remaining realistic, but do you really desire much beyond the realm of realism? I have met few people who honestly desire something that goes beyond the basic laws of the universe. I am willing to bet that everything you are looking to create will tit very nicely into the system of reality as it is currently manifested, so don’t be afraid to go after what you want in life.

I really don’t believe in greatness that is bestowed as a rare ;;:: to a few lucky ones. Rather, I think everyone has greatness inside them. It is really just a matter of persistence— sticking to what you have envisioned until it is reality. I have a deep conviction that everyone, including you, has been given exactly the right set of gifts to fulfill some magnificent purpose for their lives. Greatness must simply be chosen. And if you choose it, it will happen.

Mary Kav Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics

CAME INTO THIS WORLD wanting to be someone who makes things happen. From day one, you were a creation machine. You picked up objects in your tiny hands as soon as you could manage to grasp them. You fumbled them around in your hands, feeling their shape and texture, and even popped them in your mouth, wanting to know everything about the world around you.

As you gained knowledge of the world, you wanted to assert your influence over these objects. You pushed your bowl off the table, just to see it fall. You cooed and squealed, trying to understand the nature of your own voice. All your senses were open discovering the living world around you.
This same drive eventually pushed you up through your own developmental process as you experimented with your body And you eventually learned to walk and talk. All the while, magical events were happening in your brain—brain cells growing and connections developing.

As you grew older, you became more and more proficient at influencing the world around you. You earned money, gained status, and developed a solid sense of identity. But along with this came suffering and a yearning to go somewhere beyond this physical world. At some point, you may have asked, as I did, “What is this really all about?”

The problem with the physical world is that it is easy to for get what lies under the surface of things. When you were that in fant exploring the world, you had just come into the world with a purpose. But the world of form distracted you, and you forgot, for a moment, who you really were.

It has often been observed that there are two selves within the human being. There is the self who is present in the surrounding world—interacting, doing, making, having—and then there is the sell watching the self. The false self is a mask we wear for the world, a manufactured product of the ego.

It is something we build on and construct throughout life to give ourselves a your big dream through small achievements. Like a marathoner, you need to run the first mile to run two miles. Eventually, YOU will reach the finish line.

But how do you know you have set the right goal? Joseph Campbell is famous for saying, “Follow your bliss.” I think this applies here. If your goal makes you genuinely happy over the long term, it is probably in accord with your true self and therefore will be genuinely satisfying to you. Since the true self thrives on service to others, rather than to self, you will probably find some goal that will do amazing feats to heal and transform humanity and the world.

The brain has the remarkable power to procure results according to its master’s intention. That i* why it S important to use the brain only for causes that are productive, creative, and peaceful. If the brain only works for the attestation. no matter how productive or creative it might be. it will make your life miserable—you will never have peace. That is why setting the right goal becomes crucial.

In Eastern thought, there is the saving, “Where the mind goes, energy follows.” In other words, energy travels exactly where your mind wants it to go. Everything we accomplish in this world begins with a conscious thought.

This is not as esoteric or magical as it might seem; it is just the common sense way that things happen. For example, if you admire a tall building in the middle of the city, you can be certain that it all began in the mind of the architect working in tandem with the investors, contractors, and workers who brought it into being. As all these minds came together, energy began to flow toward the fulfillment of the vision. In that way, imagination became reality. Every space mission, very classic piece of art, every saintly act began as a thought in someone’s mind.

You can think of your life as being a little like knitting. When you first begin, there is no shape to it, but YOU keep knitting with some goal in rnind—to make a sweater, a sock, or whatever.

I have played golf for more than 30 years. I love it because it is a beautiful chance to connect mind and body through focused attention to a single goal: getting the ball in the hole. For me, playing golf is very much a metaphor for the process of life itself.

Recently, I gained some insight through the process of improving my game. For years I had been struggling to hit longer drives. The lengths of the shots were not so bad, about 230 yards on average, but I knew this was far short of the 300 or more yards that professionals hit. I kept wondering, “How do they do that? Why can’t I do that?” I played for so many years without hitting that mark that it started to seem impossible.

Then someone suggested a slight change in my swing. They suggested that I position my hips so that the weight of the hips would go into the swing, rather than relying on mere arm strength. I tried this, and I could feel the energy of my entire body transferring into the ball. Suddenly, the length of my drive jumped to 310 yards.

If you set a vision for your life, you are bound to come up against situations that seem impossible to overcome. Like me and my drive length, it may seem like you experience the same thing over and over again without making any headway. The key is to look very carefully at the habits you have and ask if they are really channeling energy in the right direction. In the case of my golf swing, only a very tiny adjustment made a huge difference, and the same might be true for your life. Previously I had mistakenly thought that I needed to hit the ball harder for it to go farther. Likewise, success in life does not always mean using more strength. Even very slight shifts in habit and attention can make all the difference.

The great news is that you have infinite power to change and refine your brain. A few decades back, cientists thought that people could have very little influence over their brains. It was assumed that by the time people reached adulthood their brain connections were permanently and indelibly in place. In childhood, one might be able to exert some influence over the development of the brain, but for the most part these things were genetically determined. It was thought that the old adage “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” was literally true.
More recently, scientists have discovered that the opposite is true. There is a quality to the brain called neuroplasticity that allows you, right up to the end of your life, to restructure and adapt your brain according to your needs. You can learn new things and adapt to new environments, even in extreme old age.
You may protest that the “old dog” does seem a little resistant to “new tricks.” Common experience would suggestthat young children learn and adapt more quickly than adults, especially older adults.
This is, in fact, often the case, but I would suggest that it is partly a matter of choice, rather than a predetermined trait of the brain. There may indeed be some biological barriers to overcome as we get older. The brain’s connections do become denser and slower as we fill the brain with the experiences
and knowledge of a lifetime. However, most people lose a great deal of their neuroplasticity simply because they choose not to use it. For that reason, I encourage you to use and challenge your brain as much as possible. You will find that, in the end, developing your brain is the same as leading a vital, fulfilling lifestyle.

From the Book ” Brain management” by ilchi lee
