Different people have different methods for coping with depression and anxiety. Some may turn to friends and family for a sympathetic ear, while others use exercises such as yoga to relieve stress. However, some individuals turn to substances such as alcohol in order to forget their troubles. This is worrisome in light of a recent study that found that 10 percent of American children are currently living with an alcoholic parent, as reported by Blisstree.
The findings are based on a survey of 7.5 million children, conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Those who lived in a household dealing with alcoholism tended to live with both parents, but among single-parent homes, mothers tended to struggle more with alcohol.
Such circumstances may predispose children to mental health problems, abuse, neglect or future alcoholism.
"I don't know about you, but this makes me want to put down the wine and spend more time on my yoga mat and in the bath tub to relieve that stress," Deborah Dunham wrote in the news source.
Parents or children who want to learn more about how yoga can help them deal with stress should feel free to check out Oregon yoga classes. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, such exercises can improve mood, blood pressure and muscle relaxation.
