While the former can be part of the natural process of loss and bereavement, such as the death of a loved one, the latter may manifest themselves for no apparent reason as part of psychiatric illnesses. Professional medical associations may soon consider grief as a form of depressive illness rather than a natural emotion, according to the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>This decision has divided care providers who are concerned about what treatments will be given to which patients. Further complicating matters is that some people begin experiencing symptoms even before a loved one dies, due to the stress of dealing with a serious illness.</p>
<p>Thankfully, Oregon yoga classes and similar regimens can serve as a complementary, non-pharmaceutical approach to grief, according to psychologist Joseph Nowinski, PhD. Other alternative approaches may include meditation and massage therapy.</p>
<p>&quot;What we would recommend is that not only patients, but their loved ones as well, avail themselves of these complementary therapies as soon as possible,&quot; Nowinski wrote in the column. &quot;Doing so will not by any means prevent grief, but it may help to ameliorate the chronic stress that comes with coping with terminal illness, and which can can complicate the grieving process.&quot;</p>
<p>According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, yoga can help improve stress management as well as mood.</p>

Hormonal changes and a growing body probably don&#039;t help. However, one dietitian and community volunteer believes that Oregon yoga classes can provide an evidence-based risk prevention approach for youth.</p>
<p>&quot;Yoga teaches us positive values and ethics such as telling the truth, not stealing, promoting integrity, accountability, responsibility, sexual ethics, self-discipline, healthy eating, practicing happiness and non-violence,&quot; practitioner Gloria Campuzano wrote in a guest column for The Oregonian.</p>
<p>She points out that yoga is being used in wellness centers, juvenile justice facilities and schools all around the country. One example is the Street Yoga Organization in Portland. Yoga can help improve depression and anxiety in children, as well as other issues, by increasing mind-body awareness, improving stress management and teaching personal ethics. But as far as risk reduction programs go, yoga is not federally funded, Campuzano said.</p>
<p>As of 2007, 1.5 million American children reported practicing yoga, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a division of the National Institutes of Health. Besides providing psychological benefits, yoga can also support healthy body composition, lung capacity, heart rate, strength and flexibility.</p>

Athletes may use it for conditioning. Celebrities use it for body sculpting. However, a growing number of medical professionals are using it as a complementary treatment for depression and anxiety, as well as for a number of other conditions.</p>
<p>Brant Rogers and Paul Salmon are two yoga practitioners who were invited to discuss the holistic exercise at the Spring 2012 Annual Scientific Conference on mindfulness. They&#039;ve reviewed studies on yoga in the context of back pain, cancer and other illnesses.</p>
<p>&quot;The very broad effects documented in these studies show that this practice affects our life as a whole,&quot; the practitioners wrote in The Forest Grove News-Times. &quot;Those effects extend beyond fixing what is wrong to enhancing what is right in our inherent and global capacity for healing through heart, mind and body.&quot;</p>
<p>However, the practitioners emphasize that the importance of yoga doesn&#039;t lie in complex poses and rituals, but in the creation of a safe, attentive and relevant experience for an anxious or depressed individual, the news source said.</p>
<p>According to the Yoga Journal, 14 million Americans practiced these exercises on the recommendation of a medical professional in 2008. Patients looking for Oregon yoga classes shouldn&#039;t have much trouble finding one!</p>

Some intend to take up a new hobby. Others promise to participate in community service. But among the most common resolutions are smoking cessation, exercise and weight loss.</p>
<p>Research previously published by the Journal of Clinical Psychology compared people who made New Year&#039;s resolutions to individuals intending to enact life changes at a later point in the year. After six months, only 4 percent of the latter group were successful in achieving their goals. For those who made New Year&#039;s resolutions, that figure went up to 46 percent.</p>
<p>While that&#039;s a much better result, it still demonstrates that less than one-half of resolvers can reach their goal!</p>
<p>So how do people who resolve to lose weight stick it out? For starters, try not to overdo it.</p>
<p>&quot;Most people work out too hard and they&#039;re not burning the fat they want, get frustrated and start to work out a little harder, and that&#039;s how people get injured,&quot; said personal trainer Casey Ruff, as quoted by an ABC news affiliate. Furthermore, it&#039;s important for an individual to take up something that they find fun.</p>
<p>For those who are interested in Dahn Yoga and weight loss, it&#039;s easy to find a center near you. So don&#039;t wait &#8211; there are only 11 months and change left!</p>

<p>&quot;Similar to an addiction recovery program, a consistent yoga practice helps people develop respect for their body, learn healthy ways to cope with stress and instill a sense of hope and faith,&quot; fitness professional Jill Lawson wrote for Diets in Review.</p>
<p>Some people in recovery were so inspired by yoga&#039;s positive effects that they went on to establish drug addiction programs that also incorporate a yoga regimen, Lawson said.</p>

Not only do the shifts in hormone levels drive uncomfortable hot flashes and other symptoms &#8211; they can rob women of a good night&#039;s sleep. However, Portland yoga classes may be beneficial to Oregonian women going through this major transition, as suggested by a new study.</p>
<p>A team of researchers investigated the effects of yoga in 44 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 65 years. These subjects were assigned to one of three different regimens: yoga, passive stretching or no treatment. The women also filled out questionnaires before and after the study period, assessing factors such as depression and anxiety symptoms, insomnia, stress and other variables.</p>
<p>After four months, those who performed yoga exercises had significant improvements in their quality of life compared to the control group. When it came to insomnia, the yoga practitioners had greater reductions in symptoms than women in either the passive stretching or control segments, as explained in the journal Menopause.</p>
<p>&quot;We are not saying that yoga can cure postmenopausal symptoms,&quot; researcher Helena Hachul wrote in an email to Reuters Health. &quot;But it can improve and relieve them.&quot;</p>
<p>However, women don&#039;t have to wait until menopause to reap the benefits of yoga. In fact, about 72 percent of yoga practitioners in the U.S. are women, according to the Yoga Journal.</p>

<p>NCCAM is supporting research into the effects of yoga on various aspects of health, including the immune system, joints and mental well-being.</p>
