Weight loss methods like yoga can help prevent diabetes development
If you are looking to shed a few pounds, you're not alone. Losing weight is the top priority of millions of Americans today, what with the skyrocketing prevalence of obesity-associated illnesses like cardiovascular disease, cancer and stroke. Eating high-fat, high-calorie diets and having a sedentary lifestyle may also lead to the development of type 2 diabetes. This metabolic disorder can increase a person's likelihood of having Alzheimer's disease or other neurodegenerative conditions later in life, according to a popular CNN article.
Lead investigator Rachel Whitmer and her team of epidemiologists from Kaiser Permanente Northern California conducted a study among 1,000 men and women over the age of 60. The scientists discovered that individuals who had type 2 diabetes were twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease within 15 years, compared to people who did not have the disorder. Overall, participants with the metabolic condition were 75 percent more likely to be diagnosed with dementia of any kind.
"It's really important for the public to understand that diabetes is a significant risk factor for all of these types of dementia," Whitmer said, quoted by CNN. "[The study provides] really good evidence that people with diabetes are at greater risk, but we need to look at other studies to find out why."
The rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes has prompted many people to adopt a variety of weight loss methods. One good strategy may be the holistic Eastern program of yoga, which promotes deep breathing, meditating, stretching and posing. Not only can the mind-body regimen enhance a person's mental and emotional well-being, but it can also help them improve their flexibility and metabolism.
This is one reason why Portland yoga classes are so popular among Oregon residents, many of whom are engaging in the mindfulness system to help them lose weight and reduce their risk of numerous diseases.
