
Yoga can help soothe depression and anxiety symptoms
Depression and anxiety symptoms can be stressful, frightening and debilitating. Experiencing tension and sadness on a regular basis may significantly reduce an individual's quality of life. According to a popular article currently trending on CNN, nearly half of the adults who participated in a survey reported that although they experienced depressive symptoms, they did not seek medical help because they were afraid that the doctor would reveal their condition to employers. Additionally, many of these people said they did not want to be prescribed antidepressants.
Study co-author Richard Kravitz, a professor of internal medicine at the University of California, Davis, explained that the fact that 43 percent of participants hid their depression from their doctors highlights the need for practitioners to discuss mood problems during routine checkups.
The team surveyed a total of 1,054 California residents over the phone about their general health, access to medical care and family histories of mental illness.
"The primary care sector cares for a majority of patients with mental health conditions in America, and we know that depression is undertreated everywhere," Kravitz told the news source. "The number one reason for that is because recognition of depression starts with disclosure from the patient."
People who struggle with depression should seek immediate attention for their illness. In some cases, doctors may not need to prescribe drugs. Instead, the patient may opt for a natural method of stress relief such as yoga. The holistic mind-body regimen features breathing exercises, stretches and poses that can help reduce tension.
The soothing program is associated with many benefits. While some Americans choose to engage in yoga for weight loss, others depend on its gentle maneuvers to help them alleviate pain, relieve anxiety and achieve a sense of inner peace.
